Why Work With Us?

Experienced Professionals

Dan Soeder, the principal consultant at Soeder Geoscience LLC has over 45 years of professional experience with energy and the environment.  This includes a decade as a researcher at the Gas Technology Institute in Chicago, 18 years as a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey on the Yucca Mountain Project and in the mid-Atlantic, and eight years as a research scientist at the National Energy Technology Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy.  He also spent three years directing an energy resource program at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

A Proven Track Record

Research findings are of no use unless people know about them.  Dan Soeder has a long publication record beginning in the 1980s and extending to the present day.  He published a paper in 1988 that indicated the gas resources of the Marcellus Shale were much greater than anticipated.   This paper was ignored for twenty years until the Marcellus became a major shale gas play in 2008, and is now considered a foundational study for shale gas.  His recent publications have focused on the shale revolution, fracking and the environment, and fossil fuels, greenhouse gas and climate change.  A full list is on the publications page.

Hands-on Expertise

We are out there on the outcrop, visiting the drill rig, or going underground into the mine.  We collect samples, bring them back for analysis, make field measurements, and emplace instruments.  We have Landsafe training and fire resistant coveralls for active drill sites, underground safety training and years of experience in mines and tunnels, and decades of outdoors experience from the deserts of the southwest to the stream valleys of the northeast.   One can only get so much information from publications, computer simulations, and geophysics.  As drill rig geologists often say, "You don't know what is down there until you actually get down there."  Likewise, you don't know what's out there until you get out there.  Geologists have a name for this.  It is called "ground truth."   We believe in ground truth.
